Some Information About Joshimath

Basic Map

Auli

Auli is a ski destination in Chamoli district in the Himalayan mountains of Uttarakhand. Auli is also known as Auli Bugyal in Garhwali, which means “meadow”. It is located at an elevation of 2,500 meters (8,200 ft) to 3,050 meters (10,010 ft) above sea level. Auli can be reached by road or ropeway from Joshimath .It provides an excellent panoramic view of the giant mountain peaks like Nanda Devi, Kamet and Dunagiri. From January to March, the Auli slopes are usually covered with a thick carpet of snow, about 3 mts deep. In Auli the stretch of 3 Kms. with a drop in elevation of 500 mts. is considered to be a very good skiing ground by international standard. The background of lofty snow clad mountains heightens the spirit of the skiers. To attract attention, skiing festivals are also conducted at Auli. These now include the national championships staged by the Winter Games Federation Of India. While skiing is the chief attraction at Auli, there are other attraction like cable car rides and rope lifts, or spend the day outdoors building snowmen, or having snowball fights.

Niti-Malari-Valley

Nanda Devi Veiw Point

It is a park located 2km from Badagaon on Malari. The view includes mesmerising Nanda Devi, Trishuli, Dronagiri, Kamet, Rattaban ranges and Neelkanth. It is a paradise for photographers for morning and evening view of these peaks. It is 8km far from Panchvati Inn.

Tapovan

It is a small hamlet towards malari road. There are two kind of hotsprings in the village. The first hotspring is 500m from the tapovan village. One can reach hotspring by walking 200m down from the road. The water of the spring is adequate for bathing and enjoying for a while. The spring is near to Shiva Temple.
The second hotspring is 3km from tapovan on right side of the road. The water over here is very hot which enables one to boil eggs or potato. This hotspring is quite famous and since nearer to road as compared to earlier one.

Bhavishya Badri Trek

Literally, the Badrinath of the future, the temple of Bhavishya Badri is at Subain, about 17 Kms from Joshimath to the east toward Lata. It is beyond Tapovan, up the Dhauliganga river and involves a trek of about 3 Kms. from the motor road. It has an altitude of 2744 mts. and is located within dense forest. The approach along the Dhauli river is stimulating. The name Dhauliganga means (white water) and truly it is roaring torrent almost everywhere upstream from Tapovan and passes through almost perpendicular cliffs on either side, several 100 mts. high and wild in the extreme.
It is believed that on the onset of Kalyug , the ever-withering arm of the Narasingha idol at Joshimath will finally fall off and the mountains of Jay and Vijay at Patmila near Vishnuprayag will collapse making the present shrine of Badrinath inaccessible, resulting in Badrinath’s reappearance and consequent worship at Bhavishya Badri. After Vishnu, in his incarnation as Kalki, destroys the world bringing Kalyug to an end satyug will begin again and Badrinath Dham will be reestablish at Bhavishya Badri.

Malari Village

Malari is a small village near the Indo-Tibetan border near Joshimath in Chamoli district. Located in Dhauli Ganga valley at a height of 3048 meters, Malari village is encircled by steep snow-covered mountains. Inhabitants of Malari village moves to the lower part of Himalayas during winters due to heavy snowfall.

SHANKARA CHARYA MUTT

This is the math established by Adi Shankaracharya in North India. The math has temples of Badrinarayan and Rajrajeshwari Devi. It has a sacred cave where Adi Shankaracharya supposedly undertook tapasya.

Narsimha Temple

This is an ancient temple of Lord Vishnu in Narsingh Avtar and main temple of Joshimath. It has an idol of Lord Narsingh, which is considered established by Shankaracharya. The temple Narasimha, is enshrined Badrinarayan along with a pantheon of deities. The presiding deity Lord Narasimha is believed to have been established by Adi Sankara. It is one of the "Divya Desams", the 108 temples of Vishnu revered by the 12 Tamil poet-saints or Alvars. As per local belief, the right hand of this idol has become as thin as hair. On the day when it will break, the mountains Jay-Vijay (which are situated on a way to Badrinath) shall join and become one and Lord Badrinath of Badrinath temple will disappear from the present temple and re-appear as black stone (Shaligram) at new place called Bhavishya Badri. During the period when Badrinath temple remains closed during winter every year, Lord Badrinath is worshiped here for six months

Hemkund Sahib And Valley Of Flowers

Hemkund Sahib

Situated at a height of over 15,000 feet above the sea level in the Himalayan ranges of district Chamoli , Sri Hemkunt Sahib has emerged as a popular centre of Sikh Pilgrimage which is visited by thousands of devotees from all over the world every summer. Hemkund is inaccessible because of snow from October through April.
The take-off point for Hemkund is the town of Govindghat about 275 kilometres from Rishikesh. The 13 kilometres trek is along a reasonably well maintained path to the village of Ghangaria. There is another Gurudwara where pilgrims can spend the night. In addition there are a few hotels and a campground with tents and mattresses. A 1,100-metre (3,600 ft)climb on a 6-kilometre of stone paved path leads Hemkund. There are no sleeping arrangements at Hemkund so it is necessary to leave by 2 pm to make it back to Govindghat by nightfall.
